Beef Stew Served in a Bread Bowl

Ingredients for the Beef Stew:

  • Stewing beef, cubed – 1 ½ pounds (680g)
  • All-purpose flour – 2 tablespoons
  • Salt and black pepper – to taste
  • Vegetable oil – 2 tablespoons
  • Large onion, chopped – 1
  • Garlic cloves, minced – 2
  • Carrots, peeled and sliced – 3
  • Potatoes, peeled and diced – 3
  • Celery stalks, chopped – 2
  • Diced tomatoes – 1 can (14 oz)
  • Beef broth – 4 cups
  • Worcestershire sauce – 2 teaspoons
  • Dried thyme – 1 teaspoon
  • Dried rosemary – 1 teaspoon
  • Bay leaf – 1
  • Frozen peas – 1 cup
  • Fresh parsley, chopped – for garnish

Ingredients for the Bread Bowls:

  • Round bread loaves (sourdough or Italian) – 4
  • Butter – for brushing (optional)
