Although McGraw was single at the time, Hill was still engaged to Scott Hendriks. After the two shared an intimate moment behind stage, she broke off her engagement.
A few months after the couple started dating, McGraw, who was getting ready to play at a country music festival, asked Hill to marry him.
“And she said, ‘You’re asking me to marry you at a country music festival in a trailer house? And I said, ‘Well, it’s pretty apropos if you think about it.’ She goes, ‘Are you serious?’ And I said, ‘Well, yeah, I’m serious.”
While he had to rush off before getting an answer, when he returned to his trailer he read the note Hill had left him on his mirror, “Yes, I’m gonna be your wife.”
The two got married on October 6, 1996 at McGraw’s aunt’s house in Louisiana.
