This is where things get interesting. People have been trying to figure out what “SPAM” really means for a very long time. There are a few different ideas:

- Some people think it means “Specially Processed American Meat.”
- Others say it means “Shoulder of Pork and Ham.”
- There are even people who say it means “Salt Preserves Any Meat” or “Spiced Ham.”
However, there is a story that in a naming contest, a Hormel executive’s brother, Ken Daigneau, came up with the name SPAM. It is said that he combined the words “spiced” and “ham” to create the name, and he won $100 for it. The founder of the company, Jay Hormel, said that he thought the name was “perfect.”
