Mamdani’s campaign had already positioned him as a counterweight to Trump’s policies, particularly on immigration, and his bold remarks make it clear that he intends to continue the fight from City Hall.
”If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him,” Mamdani told supporters.
”If you have a communist running New York…”
The city’s Board of Elections reported the largest voter turnout in more than 50 years, with more than two million New Yorkers casting ballots.
The victory is part of a broader sweep for Democrats in Tuesday’s elections, energizing the party ahead of next year’s congressional contests.
Mamdani’s win also sets the stage for a high-stakes showdown with Trump, who has already threatened to withhold federal funding if the Democratic socialist takes office.
”If you have a communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there,” Trump warned on CBS’ 60 Minutes, signaling that Republicans will make Mamdani’s progressive policies a target.
Still, the mayor-elect is undeterred. While outlining plans to tackle the city’s cost-of-living crisis — including a proposed rental freeze, universal childcare, and other bold measures — he made one thing clear:
”So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: To get to any of us you will have to go through all of us.”
Inside Mamdani’s policies
At just 34, Zohran Mamdani has risen rapidly, shaking up New York’s political scene. With his left-leaning, populist message, he has now claimed the most powerful position in the city.
